Dollar Store vs Name Brand: Breakfast Video Transcript

Welcome to our final, for now, Dollar Store Versus Brand Name taste test. Five for Five! Five for five. This is breakfast items like cereal and granola bars and stuff. We are starting with… This way, this way, number… oh no you’re right. Okay sorry. Blueberries. As normal. These. No, hush hush.

Blueberry Breakfast Biscuits (Belvita)

Okay so we’ve got Belvita as the name brand, and the dollar store is… Breakfast Biscuits. Breakfast blueberry biscuits. So that’s blueberry brand, or flavor. 24 cents for the dollar store per ounce and 41 for the name brand. Also check out the picture on the front here. Doesn’t that look moldy? It does look moldy. I just feel like, I’m not enthused to consume that. No there’s, no picture [on the dollar store]. No picture.

I mean they’re going for the wheat graphic. Pretty similar. Yeah.

All right, dink it. Cheers!

It broke.

I don’t think I’m going to tell a difference. That’s pretty close. So dry.

They’re so similar. Sorry it broke into a big, big bite. They’re very similar.

I bet the ingredient list is a little different, but…

I wonder if this is one of those generics where they’re made at the same spot? Yeah look at, what is the print? Is it like the same exact print? No it’s not the same exact print. Well it’s pretty darn close. Okay well they’re similar, very similar. So there you go. In this case, dollar store, you could go with that and save some money.

Cinnamon Toast Cereal (Cinnamon Toast Crunch)

Cinnamon Toast Crunch. And cinnamon toasters. Alrighty so this one is again one that doesn’t feel fair for the price comparison, because I had bought just a little one. So this one was 47 cents an ounce and this [dollar store] was 13 an ounce. Right, so a regular box isn’t going to come down that much. Cereal is expensive! Okay I feel like I want to start with the dollar store. Oh wow they look super similar though. I was gonna say, looking at, it looks good. Oops. That’s ok, we got a dog now. It’s okay. I think that… what don’t they say like there’s swirls in every bite or something? Is that a thing? Yeah I think you’re right. Which I think is true… you can see that swirl. No I see no swirls on the dollar store.

Look this is dollar store. It’s a little drier, but it’s way better than I was expecting. It tastes like how I remember Cinnamon Toast Crunch tasting. Oh well now you have an official test. I’ll cleanse my palate again. Oh my! They are, that is very… I’m surprised. It’s very similar, but I think there’s more cinnamon and sugar, and there definitely are more swirls. See? Look at the swirl action on that! Yeah there’s more swirls, but honestly… I can’t tell the difference. I thought I would be able to. No, no difference at all. What was the difference in price? It was huge. But that’s [the odd size]. But again, dollar store beats it out! Interesting.

Strawberry Granola Bars (Nutrigrain)

All right next is strawberry, as you can tell. See? It says strawberry with a picture and just fruit, grain, and bar. And Nutrigrain. So these are the like soft, baked, granola breakfast bars. Do you care which one? Which one do you want? I don’t care.

I don’t know why I closed my eyes, because I can immediately see what it is. 16 cents per ounce for the dollar store and 26 cents an ounce for the Nutrigrain. Let’s do a comparison, I’m very curious. I’ll pull the whole thing out? Mm hmm.

Ooo wow.

Also these apparently are both 1.3 ounce bars. But look at the size difference. It’s got like little oat pieces.

They’re apparently the same. It’s a little bit… the dollar store is a little bit wider and looks moister and has more of the oats on top. If you were to look at these, I would say that look the Nutrigrain looks like the bargain one. Just like other things we’ve done in this dollar store taste test [series], it just takes me back to my childhood.

What do you think of yours? I think it’s fine.

It’s fine, but I like the inside of that one more… the Nutrigrain more. Yeah. But if you needed like something quick? You know, I’ll say the inside of this one [Nutrigrain] is better. The outside of that one [dollar store] is better. It’s softer. They’re very similar too. But they’re very similar. Flavor wise, I don’t think I’ve really noticed a difference. So again, dollar store can saving you some money.

Peanut Butter Sandwich Bar (Nature Valley)

Nature Valley Biscuits, peanut butter and Breakfast Sandwich peanut butter. Should I close my eyes? No, you can just open that one this time. This one is 28 cents an ounce for the dollar store, and 40 cents an ounce for the Nature Valley. Now this is funny to me because it’s the exact same print as the blueberry. It’s the same company from the dollar store. Yeah but it’s just funny that is the same design. Is this the same as the Belvita? No, it is not.

This is so burnt here. It’s so burnt here. Yeah, this is not burnt at all. And your peanut butter [Nature Valley], your peanut butter looks so much better than my peanut butter. Oh I can’t even open it. That’s so sad. I thought I could open it. Can you open yours? Yeah… [It breaks] oh hmm. It’s nature valley so it’s not surprising that it’s crumbling like that. Haha.

Okay let’s see. I’m gonna break it because I don’t want to eat the burnt part.

Peanut buttery? Yes.

I don’t have a lot to say it’s fine. That [Nature Valley] was good. Oh I don’t like the aftertaste of the dollar store one.

Hmm, I like the Nature Valley biscuits.

But I don’t know, I’m not crazy about these. I prefer just having like my own peanut butter that I spread on crackers. I’m waiting for the aftertaste. Did you get it? Is it there? I don’t know if I really… I have… there’s something, but? Um, the Nature Valley is better. But I’m not like wowed by it. I’m not… I’ve never had these before. The peanut butter Nature Valley Biscuits. Me neither, but I will say that the Nature Valley is…

It’s a better better mouth feel. I’ve brought that out twice in these videos now. But it’s, I don’t know, this [Dollar Store] is harder. It just feels like it’s been sitting in my backpack, hiking for a while. Maybe because it has been?

Chewy Chocolate Chip Granola Bars (Quaker Oats)

Now we have our last one, Quaker Chewy Chocolate Chip Bars. This is going to take me back to my childhood. I ate these all the time, for like a snack in school. And just Chewy Chocolate Chip Select Choice. It’s funny because the [wrapper], it just says Granola Bar. Granola Bar! Is it peanut butter… is it chocolate… is it…? You better keep it in that box! You don’t know, there’s no information. Oh it does say chocolate chip in very fine print here on the edge. Like embossed. I think these are really different.

How many chocolate chips do you have? Well if you look at it this way, I [dollar store] have zero chocolate chips. I only got the three on the end. But on the top? Flip it over. I have three on the top. You have more. More, so Quaker’s giving you more chocolate chips. I know, it’s good, it’s a great granola bar. Technically the dollar store one is larger because it’s 0.88 ounces per bar. I didn’t get any of it yet. UGH! What? It is a lot harder. It’s not as chewy? Not as chewy. But it’s called… it’s still called Chewy. Chewy’s the biggest thing on the box! 24 cents per ounce for the dollar store ones and 37 cents for the Quaker.

Look how soft. It’s like bending and molding in my hands. That’s how soft it is, the Quaker Oats. The flavor [on the dollar store], not as good either. It is… I’m gonna eat this to get that taste on my mouth. Oh no, it’s that bad? Oh it’s so much harder, denser. Yeah.

Dollar Store vs Name Brand Taste Test Summary

Most of the dollar store stuff that we’ve done, I’ve not been like “oh this one’s so much worse.” But this one, as the final, last one. I don’t notice it. Oh, to me, it was a lot worse. This one had, the dollar store one, has more of like an oat to it. And we’re back! I had a little problem with the camera. But so, I think I was saying that out of all our dollar store taste tests I didn’t like that chewy granola bar as the dollar store. But this one had the most dollar store rivals.

They were really similar. Yeah, very similar. Yeah go back if you haven’t seen all the other dollar store versus name brand taste tests, there’s a lot that we’re like “oh dollar store is actually better” or that “no, the name brand’s better.” This was very similar so yeah, maybe this will help you out as, you know, on your next shopping trip.

Also just so you know they’re more oats. They’re oats. Yes oats, it tastes more oaty in the chewy dollar store one. Okay oaty. Should we end it on oaty? Yeah definitely. It’s a good dog name, should we change it to odie? Granola Bar! Granola Bar.
