Which Bell Pepper Color is Best?
This is a bell pepper taste test (mini), to determine which color of bell pepper we prefer. But first, a poem!
Peppers shaped like a bell
Go ding-a-ling, ding-a-ling
Red, orange, green or yellow
Which one will make us sing
… its praises.
And that’s enough of our poem writing for now.
This is an easy, fast, cheap, and fun taste test and is one of the first ones done blind-folded. It has nothing to do with a brand, but rather the color of bell pepper, so we encourage you to try it out yourself.
Simply purchase 4 different color bell peppers, slice ‘em up in a consistent manner…
Blind fold yourself, mix ‘em up so you don’t know the colors (get a friend to help), each each pepper, and maybe be amazed.
Even though it’s available in 4 different colors, the bell pepper comes from the same plant! Red is the final product/ripeness, then there are premature (unripe) green peppers. This is why the green bell peppers are usually cheaper and can also be firmer. It seems orange and yellow are in between green and red. However, these peppers have been bred to fully ripen at these colors.
This video has great insight for anyone looking to learn a little pepper trivia. You never know when you might be on a game show!
Bell Pepper Taste Test Results:
So we did a pretty horrific job at guessing the right color. Interestingly enough, Eric got his least favorite correct and Jill got her favorite correct.
We don’t have a full run down of standings as in other showdowns/taste tests, as this was just a mini bell pepper taste test with the two of us. So we don’t really have a clear winner. But if you are just going to eat a pepper plain go for the ones that are more ripe….aka yellow, orange, or red. Eric thought they were pretty interchangeable, but that green is definitely not as good.
Side note – we did eat the peppers raw and without anything else, like ranch. Might be interesting to try this with some heat – aka saute the bell peppers….or dip into spicy hummus.
Final Comment
If you hold a bell pepper taste test you may end up with some leftover peppers. Here are some ideas of how to use up those leftovers:
- Instead of bread, use the peppers in open-faced sandwiches (or pizzas)
- Mix with onions and snap peas for a simple stir fry
- Throw in a salad….really any kind
- Slice a full circumference of the pepper and fry an egg inside
- Use the pepper as a nacho or just add to the top of nachos
- Saute and put on pizza or in a pasta sauce or just on your plate to eat
- Add to chicken salad
- Any recipe you have for a stuffed pepper you can just throw the stuffing on top of a pepper slice
- Dice and throw in salsa
- Give to your guinea pig… cause everyone owns guinea pigs.
- Wrap lunch meat around some sticks for a low carb snack
- Dip into hummus
