DRINKS: Dollar Store vs Name Brand Video Transcript:
Welcome to video four of the Dollar Store versus Name Brand video series. Today is drinks! We have one two three four five drinks. We always have five. And a surprise ending!
Electrolyte Water (Essentia)
So let’s start with… I don’t know. I went to the dollar store, I bought five things, and then I went to Walmart to see what I could get. And this was a sports drink… electrolyte sport water. What is this? It’s like has electrolytes in it. “Smart water” kind of a thing. Yeah… alk… alkaline… whatever. I don’t know if that’s right. Okay just you know pour a little bit. I smell nothing. I smell nothing! Well yeah, it’s water.
Yeah but I don’t know if… I think that one’s gonna have a flavor. It doesn’t say it has some flavor. It’s PH balanced. Wow yeah. So… water. Tastes like water?
I mean there’s slight… There’s a difference. Oh there’s a difference. This one almost has like a chlorine-y. I feel like you’re being… you’re trying to be sold something on this one. Whereas that one feels like science went into it. Science went into it! Yeah okay. So this is what we’re doing: the left overs… Which do you prefer? The science one. Yeah, do the science one. This one has a hair in it. Also this was uh, dollar store was two cents per ounce and the Essentia(?) was five cents an ounce. Okay, so that’s the thing now. If you have leftovers you pour it into the communal jug. Had to get the hair out. So the name brand is seven cents and the dollar store… No, five. Five versus two Two?! Wow!
Apple Juice (Mott’s)
Okay well here’s the next: applesauce… applesauce… nope. Apple Juice. So this? This is a hint towards the surprise ending. Okay so Mott’s, this is a hundred percent juice. That says it’s concentrate. From concentrate. This is a five cents, two cents. Same as the water. There’s a theme in these videos; me not being able to open things. Sorry, bumped you. I gotta be like strategic and which one I think should get the most into the communal [jug]. The great brand of Ruby Kist. Oh! It’s so light. Oh goodness gracious, You couldn’t tell that as much from the inside. This smells like applesauce it’s gonna be like childhood memories like most of these. I don’t think we buy any of this stuff in our day-to-day life.
You didn’t shake well before using, did you? Oh I did not. Maybe that’s it? Did you shake this one? No I did not. What… what? Is the… oh this has high fructose corn syrup in it. Whereas the Mott’s I believe is just apple juice. Oh this tastes fake. Yeah, Mott’s is better. Like fake sugar. Mott’s is better. Yeah, what’s the price difference? Two to five. Two cents versus five cents. So Mott’s is five cents? Over double? I would say it’s worth it. Because that one’s [dollar store] not a good applesauce. It’s so light. We were trying to go from light to dark. I didn’t explain that did I? Oh no, you didn’t.
Kiwi Strawberry Fruit Drink (Snapple)
Next is, I got this because I had a child with me and there was a child that was very excited about Donald Duck. Donald Duck? I don’t know this. Disney Donald Duck Kiwi Strawberry flavored four juice cocktails. Disney’s in the, in the dollar store? Well yeah. Disney Dollar Store Donald Duck. Whoa. Wow. this is also kiwi strawberry, Snapple. Snapple used to come in glass bottles and you’d have the fun little, like fact on the top. There’s no fact in this one, is there in that one? “You’ve got great taste,” they’re just making my ego feel better. Oh still, real fact number one one o… also known as 110: frogs never drink.
Yeah I mean they’re amphibious. I mean is it like, fish don’t drink? Technically. Don’t know. Okay this one was six cents because it’s such a small container for a dollar twenty-five. Also look at that color. That just tastes like fruit juice. Well there are four. This is um, it’s very pink. And this is also very pink but maybe feels you know kind of muted, cloudy, as if you used real fruit. But this dollar store was six cents and Snapple was seven cents. Almost the same price. Because this is so small, and you still have to pay a dollar 25 because everything’s a dollar 25.
This is another childhood one. I mean you had that as a kid right, Snapple? Yeah like kiwi strawberry? Mmm we did more of the Turkey Hill. Whoa that’s so sweet, the dollar store is so sweet. It doesn’t taste like a “Snapple.” It tastes like a fruit juice, you know? That tastes like a sugar drink. Yeah so what’s in it… sugar? Oh, no added sugar. No added sugar!? Whoa? This tastes like a fruit drink, if you will. Hope that makes sense. This one [Snapple] has added sugar. So maybe this [dollar store] is just fake sugar that they can count as not added? I don’t know how that works. I will say Snapple is better. Yes that’s mine. All right, ooh to the jug. And it’s almost the same price. I don’t think it can be seen. Let’s see… yeah getting brown.
Fruit Punch (Kool-Aid)
All right this one, I am so excited about. Kool-Aid! Fruit punch! Oh oh no I got… this is tropical punch? Oh purchasing fail, potentially. This is for fruit punch and tropical punch. They’re pretty much the same. But these containers… I have… this… this is just like brings ya back. And this is Twisted Punch! Okay so how do you do… I mean that’s pretty much the same red color. Oh yeah, I think they’re doing all right. This is a good comparison. Squeeze it? It’s like the capri sun? Oh gosh. Oh you’re gonna, you’re gonna spray that all over yourself, aren’t you? How did I do this as a child?
You snap, yeah it’s not a twist.
Oh but I want to drink from this. Okay. Maybe, oh my gosh it’s so sweet! Wow! This is pretty sweet too. This tastes like a jolly rancher. Wow I’m so sad. I thought it was gonna be so like joy filling and it’s just sweet and rotting my teeth away.
Whoa this is kind of sour? The dollar store one. Is it? Also this was another, these were close again. Two cents for the dollar store, also because you’re getting so much. Two cents for the dollar store per ounce. Three cents for the Hawaiian Kool-Aid Tropical Punch. They’re like almost identical. I don’t… really? I think they’re really different.
I mean there’s a slight difference, but… This one is… the dollar store one is like uh… sour. There’s a sour… there’s a sour bit to it.
And this one is more I get like fruit punch vibe. That’s… I don’t like that Twisted… Why is it called Twisted Punch? What makes it twisted? It’s just the name. All right let’s add to it. Oh man! What do you prefer? You say that they’re the same? It’s no longer red but we have, cola is our final. It is red, it is no longer brown.
Cola (Coca-Cola/Coke)
Cola is our final item. So of course Coca-Cola, sorry for any of you Pepsi fans. Versus this is a three liter. No it’s 2.75 liters, cola, Stars and Stripes. Now the dollar, the comparison on this is not fair because I bought… I didn’t buy like a 2 liter [Coke] because I didn’t want to buy a 2 liter. But yeah, I’m sure it’s cheaper to buy a 2-liter. But anyhow, so this [Stars and Stripes] is a penny an ounce and that’s 10 cents an ounce. Oh, for the prices. Yeah yeah okay those are the things that I’m talking about. I thought you were meaning the taste would be different. Well yeah I think the taste is going to be different but also it sounds like this is going to explode on me. Did you shake it up?
Our dog’s asleep, but not anymore. A lot of carbonation. All right, okay.
Good ol’ Coke. It’s always good. No matter when you have it? That’s an inside joke. This is very um fizzy.
Wow I’d say that’s identical looking. Cheers!
Right so, I got the dollar store. Oh I don’t remember.
Yes I would say I have the dollar store which is Stars and Stripes, great brand. That tastes like coke. A penny versus ten. Ok, one cent for a dollar store Stars and Stripes and 10 cents per [Coco-Cola]. Yeah I mean Coca-Cola is classic. I think you should consume Coca-Cola with ice cubes. It’s so much smoother. What do you think about the carbonation? There are nicer bubbles on Coca-Cola.
I don’t know I feel much difference in carbonation. I don’t know if I would necessarily know if I was served stars and stripes in a glass with ice cubes and like a lime. And vodka. Oh if you’re adding the rum then yeah I don’t think you notice at all. But yeah just normal, I mean it’d be hard to tell if anything else is mixed in. This is another one where like if you’re gonna buy it you should probably just buy the Coca-Cola.
