Mulled Wine Recipe

A simple, traditional mulled wine recipe that is easy to make.

Servings 6 glasses

Equipment

  • Solar oven (or slow cooker/crockpot)

Ingredients
  

  • 1 bottle red wine Your choice! (we usually choose a fruitier one like Merlot or Zinfandel)
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 inch ginger Can use ground ginger, and mix it in
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 peel orange We prefer a mandarin orange
  • 1/4 cup honey

Optional

  • Various spices You'll see many recipes add various spices like cloves, star anise, cardamom, and so on. We just prefer it a little less overpowering. So experiment and have fun!
  • Brandy Many recipes add extra liquor, and brandy seems to be the most popular, but any liqueur will do

Instructions
 

  • Combine all ingredients
    combine the ingredients
  • Place in your cooking apparatus, in this case a solar oven, and allow to heat and simmer for 30 minutes
  • Keep on low (or whatever temperature you want to drink it at) while serving

Notes

Garnish your mulled wine with whatever you like: Common garnishes are an orange slice, cinnamon stick, and star anise. Star anise is a unique spice that seems to divide people on if they like it or not. Adding it after cooking as a garnish, is a great way to cater to people who want it, without adding it to the entire batch. Plus it looks festive!
